CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Translator is a new magazine that wants to break down the language barrier in the way we read in the world, starting in 2025.

Our aim is to give readers access to the rich media landscape of the world beyond the Anglosphere through translated journalism and reportage.

We’re building a community of readers, writers and translators to make that possible, independent of any other publication.

Rather than sending out journalists from London or New York to write about the world, we want to highlight what is already there, in all its linguistic diversity, and work with translators to bring this to a new audience, in English.

In the process, we also want to celebrate translation itself, as a vital process of cultural mediation.

If we do make a surplus – a big if – at least half of this will be given to charities working to support translation and translators, or writing in languages other than English.

If you are a translator, or a regular reader of long-form journalism in a language other than English, then we want to hear from you and we’d love to work with you

1. Recommendations:

We are looking for recommendations of 2,000-6,000 word pieces of excellent non-fiction writing in languages other than English that we should summarise or translate.

Not news, but reportage; or stories that get behind the headlines and relate closely to the place where they have been written.
If you’d like to recommend such pieces, or tell us more about where we should be looking for them please fill in this form here, or just let us know by email at submissions@translatormag.co

2. Translation pitches:

We won’t be able to take all suggested articles in full translation. Some we will only summarise for the newsletter. But if you pitch a piece that you think we should translate, and you want to translate it yourself, then let’s talk.

Our rates for translation are 14 pence per word for up to 3,000 words or an agreed flat fee for a longer piece. We apply the 14 pence per word rate on either the number of words in the source language or in English, whichever is higher.

Alternatively, we can offer you a year’s subscription to the magazine and a donation of 100 pounds to a charity promoting translation and translators, or supporting writers and writing in languages other than English.

3. Books:

If there are books written in languages other than English you think we should publish translated excerpts from, or if there are books recently translated into English which you think we should review – let us know at submissions@translatormag.co

If you are a translator with connections to a publishing house which publishes books in languages other than English and would propose translating an excerpt from a fabulous book (with rights) then by all means pitch us to see if we can make that work.

4. Article ideas:

We will also run occasional articles by commissioned authors which relate to translation, or profiles of those working as translators or in multi-lingual or polyglot environments (not just literary or journalistic ones).

If there are subjects you think would make a great article for someone to write about linked to translation or language, or if you would like to pitch an article yourself, let us know at submissions@translatormag.co.
